Front Porch Political Talk Episode 55: Smoke and Mirrors

I don't know if we managed to fully expose the man behind the curtain in this episode but we covered a lot of different topics during the conversation! We didn't get through all of the articles but we had a fun time. There's also some interesting tidbits on security, media coverage and marketing thrown in.

We've all heard that magic is nothing more than smoke and mirrors, in this episode we are going to talk about how that term applies to politicians and real life. From odd products to twisted ideas and shady news, are we really seeing what we think?

Articles for Episode 359: Getting Into the Holiday Spirit

It's the beginning of the Christmas (or whatever holiday you prefer to celebrate, don't steal my thunder) Season and with that we are going to look at the insanity that is required or even expected. In this episode we're going to have a look at giving, taking and even some politics.

This is also the quasi-anniversary of the podcast! We are now rolling into our 8th season. There have been some bumps, some delays and a lot of growth over the years. Thank you to everyone for your continued support of this endeavor. Articles for this episode:

Articles for Episode 293: Ho-Hum

For whatever reason, there are always news stories that draw a "ho-hum" response from folks. That's unfortunate because the stories they tell paint a clear picture of the machinations of the left. We're going to talk about them and see what kind of response we get from our group tonight.

There were other articles that drew attention this week, however there's not enough time to discuss them in the podcast itself. Here they are; if you want to comment on them feel free!

Episode 275: Direct Your Attention

Please ignore the man behind the curtain! Actually, with the theme of "look over there" firmly embedded, we managed to make it through most of the articles and ended up closing on a bit of a different note than originally expected.

Articles for Episode 275: Direct Your Attention

While the majority of news and social media have their collective eyes glued to the same-sex marriage debate, other things have been going on. There seems to be a lot of misdirection happening and in this episode we're going to discuss some of the more disturbing articles that have come out. Articles for this episode:

In Line at Wal-Mart

My good friend Fabian Story just posted the following on Facebook:
Ok, so as I am standing in line in Wal-Mart I am privy to a conversation that takes place between two very very verl large women who have carts full of junk foods and processed pre-cooked meals laughing and talking about the fact that the are now going to vote for Obama since they have received their new Obama phone and was able to drop their contract with Verizon and now pay 10.00 a month each for the same plan they were paying 69 for the equivalent services with Verizon. They then proceeded to tell me and another lady in the line that Obama is saving this nation by "giving" everyone healthcare, phones, paying off people's houses and making it harder on businesses to screw us.

I asked her where she worked and she told me she lives off of child support for 5 kids with 4 diff daddy's and she was not ashamed to tell me that she made more by lying in court and making them "pay" than getting a real job. She said that since she did not have to report Child Support as income she lived in "rent assisted" house, gets nearly 1600 in food stamps and other services and she sees this as her right. What are we becoming?
Now, if you talk to Democrats about those who leech off our public support system, they'll tell you these are "few and far between."  Unfortunately, this isn't the only story that I've heard that follows this same narrative. It seems to me like the exception, for some demographics, is becoming more and more the rule.

Even President Obama has said, "I think we should acknowledge that some welfare programs in the past were not well designed and in some cases did encourage dependency.… As somebody who worked in low-income neighborhoods, I've seen it where people weren't encouraged to work, weren't encouraged to upgrade their skills, were just getting a check, and over time their motivation started to diminish. And I think even if you’re progressive you've got to acknowledge that some of these things have not been well designed." (ref: President Obama Admits Welfare Encourages Dependency)

Apparently in some parts of the country, it's not just the past but also the present where this is the case.

Episode 231: Conjuring Perceptions

Another late post, the joys of spring, right?

The episode was a lot of fun to record.  Shorahmin and Joesf from SecondLife joined in and we had ourselves a "grand old time" talking about the concepts of family security, the perceptions that are made based on actions and words as well as a few other fun things.

Episode 206: So Many Bad Ideas, So Little Time

Well folks, this time the show definitely did not go where it was originally planned!  Oh sure, we got through the opening article with all of its puns and groans, but after that, a completely different topic took center stage.  Luckily, it still falls in line with the "Bad idea" theme of the episode so the title didn't change.  Most everything else did.

Click Here to download the podcast, or listen using the Blubrry player (the blue ball on the right of the page).

We talked about Internet Censorship, specifically, HR 3261, otherwise known as the "Stop Online Piracy Act" which is currently before the House Judiciary Committee and is expected to pass Congress as written.

Here are the links to other sites that we referenced in the podcast:

Articles for Episode 206: So Many Bad Ideas, So Little Time

For some reason, when presented with a number of choices, it seems that people lately have been taking the worst option available. In this episode we talk about a number of different articles were bad decisions seem to be the flavor of the day. Here are the articles we've lined up to discuss:
Of course, there was more going on in the news this week. Here are the articles that didn't make the list:

Episode 187: Narrative and Counter

The political maneuvering for 2012 has begun in earnest already and, while much of it is "status quo" there seems to be a lot going on from both sides of the aisle to define and counter-define the opposition and the issues.

Tonight's recording has some technical issues - mainly caused by the fact that I'm recording on a less than optimal Internet connection.  There's still lots of good items talked about!  One link not included in the show notes is the history of the debt ceiling, as found at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:US_Public_Debt_Ceiling_Trillions.png.  Our Conservative Minute was provided by Stefan Bartelski, host of the Patriot Come Lately podcast.

Articles for Episode 179: What Are They Talking About?

Here are the articles that we're planning on talking about during the podcast for May 15, 2011.  As you may have noticed in last week's podcast, we did not make it through all of the articles.  If we don't get to one and you want to discuss it, be sure to let us know!  You can either post a comment here or email us at conservativepodcast@gmail.com.

They're talking, are we listening?  In this episode we are going to discuss some of the messages that have been sent by judgements, bills and speeches.  Join us for the conversation at 8:30pm on Sundays or listen any time here!
