Episode 109: Yes Gwen, There is a Santa Claus

Our last show of the year, but definitely not our last show! We had quite a lot of fun with the show tonight and got through a LOT of stories. We still had to dump a couple.

Tonight's show has some good and some not so good examples of this year's proof that there is still a Santa Claus. Unfortunately we've also got some stories that talk about various attacks on the Christmas holiday.

Article list for tonight (though we didn't get to the last two):

Episode 108: They Eat Their Wounded

Tonight's show ran long but man was it worth it! We had a lot of items to cover, especially about the main issue - the growing evidence that the Democrats are continuing to crack under the growing pressure of majority. Liberals are upset with the "establishment" that Obama campaigned to change and the Republicans are sitting back and prodding them towards implosion when needed.

You know it's getting bad when Air America is running shows speaking ill of Obama!

Episode 107: Schools, Speeches, Spending and Stupid Decisions

In this week's episode, we are going to dig in to a few different items that need the attention. First, Obama's Nobel acceptance speech with captioning courtesy of the Huffington Post. Then we're going to talk about that oh-so-nasty financial reform bill that was pushed through the House. Finally we've got an update on those poor enemy combatants being kept in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba and what's going to happen to them. Join us every Sunday at 8:30pm EST or listen any time at http://www.eastcoastconservative.com

Site Move Completed

In the past couple of episodes, I've made hints that things were about to change on the website... and now as you can see, that change is complete!  The decision was made to migrate the podcast's website from my private hosting to Blogger for a few different reasons.  I hinted at a few in episode 106 but for those that might ask again, here are a few answers:

You will notice quite a few of the differences immediately:

  • Flash Player: I have removed the flash player from each episode.  Instead you can use the Blubrry layer located on the top right-hand side of the page.  This player runs in a pop-up window that can continue to run even when you navigate away from the site.
  • Tags, Tags and more Tags: A few blocks down from the Blubrry player is a section called "Things We've Talked About".  This contains a list of all the different subjects talked about in the past.  Clicking on one of them will show you all of the posts that have that tag assigned.  The larger the font size of the word, the more it has been discussed.  For example, Obama has been talked about more than Jesse Jackson, so the font size of his name is larger.
  • Layout: More compliant and hopefully easier to use.
  • Additional Authors: Now Ken (or anyone else we invite) can create posts on the site without having to go through me first.
For you, the listener and reader, the change-over should be done already.  The RSS feed has stayed the same  (http://feeds.feedburner.com/EastCoastConservative) and obviously the website URL has moved here as well.

There are some things that might be a bit "glitchy" for a while.  The RSS feed will be getting odd updates because of my need to go back and tag the past entries.  I also have about 35 more posts to bring over, mainly from early 2009.  I've already done a lot of tagging but it's a process that takes quite some time.  Because of that, I'm going to be turning off the feed updates on Facebook until things are at least partially completed.  I found out the hard way that the Facebook feed tools will re-publish anything that has changed, not just new entries, and I don't want to be accused of spamming anyone.

If you have questions about the move that I don't answer here, by all means ask!

Episode 106: Cojones

In tonight's episode we're talking about the obvious presence or lack of cajones that are expressed in the selection of news articles. From a secretary that felt bad to Obama's Afghan decision, it's going to be a big case of balls! Join us tonight at 8:30pm or visit http://www.eastcoastconservative.com

Episode 105: Commentary and Reasoned Debate

Tonight's off-scheduled show is brought to you by the letters "Y" (for yelling), "I" (for "impatient") and the number 42, which is either the average airspeed of a coconut laden swallow or maybe it's the answer to the ultimate question of life, the universe and everything. Or maybe both. Regardless, it's been a bit of a slow news week and with all the different issues that have come up recently with hot-button items, I felt it was time we talked about debating, discussions and arguments.

Some folks might wonder why we would bring up debating when we're a commentary show. That's part of the issue: some times people need to know the differences and seldom do they understand them.

Episode 104: Roundtable

Tonight is our 104th which based on fuzzy math is two years of podcasts! For tonight's show we have some friends with us to reflect on things we said then, where those items are now and where we think they're going to be looking forward. Stick around, it's going to be a wild ride!

With us tonight we have Matt Myers, a guest on a few occasions as well as podcaster and writer Ron Skytower, who announced his new blog which can be found at Blog.americanpatriotvalues.com

Don't forget the calendar change for episode 105. Due to a conflict, the show will be on Saturday, November 28 instead of Sunday November 29th. We'll still be recording at 8:30pm Eastern.

Episode 103: Veteran's Day Ranting

This past week was a time for remembering and recognition. It was also a week filled with some of the most amazingly mind-boggling headlines that we have to talk about tonight! From the way the Obama administration is handling the Ft. Hood shooter to elements of the health care bill that are coming out of the text.

Be sure to mark November 22 on your calendars! That will be our episode 104 which based on fuzzy math is two years of podcasts. The show is actually a bit older than that, since we had a false start before getting "in the groove" as it were. For our second year's show we are going to have some of the folks that have joined us in the past back to reflect on things we said then, where those items are now and where we think they're going to be looking forward. You won't want to miss this episode!

Also, we have to announce a calendar change for episode 105. Due to a conflict, the show will be on Saturday, November 28 instead of Sunday November 29th. We'll still be recording at 8:30pm Eastern.

Episode 102: Are Ya Angry Yet?

The thought would be that with the positive election results in Virginia and New Jersey it'd be time to celebrate, right? Well, not willing to take anything lying down the Democrats and their allies are still at it - doing things that are getting the rest of America more and more angry. Tonight we're going to touch on a handful of different items, starting with a few things that don't make us angry and moving on from there. Might want to have a paramedic on standby for tonight's show!

Episode 101: Another Election Coming Up

As the show reaches the beginning of its third year, we find ourselves on the eve of another election cycle. Normally yearly elections are limited to the back of page 4 but this time there is such a wave of interest in government and politics that things are being watched quite heavily. Tonight we've got some election and eduction items to talk about as well as news about the fruit of congressional labor.

Episode 99: Friends in Low Places

In tonight's episode we're going to cover, among other things, those people that our President has seen fit to surround himself with. That they are democrats is expected. That they are liberals is no big surprise either. Some of the things that have come out about them, especially now, is astounding.

Episode 98: They'll Let Anyone In These Days

I think the title of this week's show says it all. This week has seen articles about suicide bomber attempts, co-ed sub crews, Taliban leadership in Afghanistan, the suggested removal of Don't Ask, Don't Tell and the awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize to Obama. All of this is great discussion fodder! In tonight's show we were also joined by Caleb, owner of QuestionObama.com. He explains the purpose and direction that his site is going. We're going to be joining him in some of those efforts too! For those who normally listen to the show live in SecondLife or via the web, you'll already know that tonight was filled with technical issues. Talkshoe's recording system didn't work though it allowed us to call in so tonight's show had to be recorded a slightly different way. It all worked out in the end

Episode 97: Back and Forth

It seems that since the Left can no longer use emotion and manipulation to silence the Right, they're going to go for blatant name-calling and intimidation. Unfortunately (for them) even the media is starting to see the holes in their Swiss cheese logic and the Right is coming out more and more rather than hiding. Episode 96: Let's Do the Time Warp Again!

As much as I like Bill Murray's "Groundhog Day," I don't want to live through it! That's what it seems like I'm doing as we get ready to see the first autumn of the Obama administration. Tonight, with the exception of the opening stories, we're going to talk about some of the news articles that point to history repeating itself... join us for the conversation! Tonight's episode is heavily edited... which is also the reason that it's two days late getting posted. We experienced some technical difficulties with the audio mixer... meaning that it could not dial in. The final recording is actually almost 15 minutes shorter than the original!

Episode 95: Do We Sound Like Seedy, Nutty Racists to you?

Wow, there's been a whirlwind of screening going on for the President over the last week - everything from claims of racism to backing off on international protection. We've got to touch on these things but can not be swayed from the health care issues that are still hanging over our heads. Tonight's show has a bit of everything - from ACORN to Immigrants. Tonight's show is being released un-edited. There are some comments about SecondLife and a lovely little bit where I'm buying time while Ken gets a phone with a charge. We're also going to talk about the ECLA's decision on homosexual clergy and some other interesting things that have happened regarding that decision. Episode 90: Analyzing Unfinished Business

On tonight's podcast we caught up with a few items that needed to be looked at again. Our government passed legislation that is already failing to live up to the promises. Big surprise there! We're also had to stomach through and comment on the words of a supporter of HR 3200. Beyond that, continued talk about the attitude of both sides on the health care issue. ObamaCare Line By Line

Thanks to the folks at RightSoup.com for linking to an actual Fact Check on ObamaCare. I felt it necessary to post the link to it here and address some of the more pertinent claims being made. The read is a long one but oh so much worth it! There are some claims that are being made (about 4 of the 47 claims discussed from the search) that are FALSE. The rest are either TRUE or PARTIALLY TRUE. This little synopsis should be a very good start for making real, legislatively based statements against this bill.

Episode 89: Angry Mob or Concerned Citizens?

Tonight's show is going to have to center on a few things that we've talked about before but have to be touched on again. First off, some updates to things that we've talked about before. Also, the events of this past week cannot go without some discussion. We've been called an angry mob and been asked to snitch on our neighbors... and still people don't see the actions of the administration as dangerous. This episode is being released unedited - there are some distractions and one restart but to be honest that's one of the things you have to deal with when recording "live". Maybe it's part of that raw, angry mob mentality but I'm going to leave it in this week. Talking about Politics and Tactics

I just have to share an email that I wrote regarding politics in general - we were talking about the whole "report a friend" message that is coming out of the White House and some one asked about the viral emails that are generally more fiction than fact.

Here's my reply:
> Is that tactic OK?
Here's the problem with politics - there are those who think it's about people, those who think it's about power, those who think it's all a game and those who pay absolutely no attention. Sadly, while the first of those is *supposed* to be true, the elected officials tend to act like it's the second, the media plays it like it's the third and the majority of the population fall into the last category.

Is the tactic of throwing out bogus stories and sending them via blog posts or emails "OK"?

I'll answer with an in-definitive maybe.

Here's why:  If I get an email like the one about Pelosi (which, BTW, I don't recall seeing until tonight) I process the message, check the validity of the contents and decide if it's worth including as content in my show.  80% of it is outright crap 5% of them are worst-case projections of what "could happen" if a particular law or amendment is passed 5% of them are scare-tactics that are too tinfoil-hattish not to see right off the bat 10% of them are actually valid statements  Here's the thing - if every person that falls into that last category I listed before were to actually check out the validity of even the 20% that LOOK feasable, they would be forced out of their bling-infested American Idol/Survivor/Desperate Housewives vicarious lives and understand what's going on around them. Imagine what our political world would be like if 80% of the eligible public voted.

> Disputes on actual legislation are AWESOME. _THAT_ is what we SHOULD be
> doing. And the more light we bring into the actual legislative process, the
> better I personally believe the legislation will be.

There's a statement that I make on my show - most Americans have forgotten how their country runs. For example, the President can boast all he wants about providing funding but unless spending legislation passes the Congress, he's full of hot air. Also, the President can not enter into either a treaty or state of war with another country without Congressional approval.

The game of Politics is, truly, the best game of plate balancing you've ever seen. On the one hand, a politician must keep the plates that are the constituents happy. This is done mainly by speeches and some trivial legislation. Another plate represents the lobby powers, still strong as ever, that keeps spinning by more legislation, some of it less than trivial. Yet another plate is the political party, in which most of the funding and all of the cross-support happens. With this plate, politicians can help each other out by spinning the plates of their friends.

There are more plates but I think you get the picture.  Sadly, most Americans don't get that game. Even those that follow politics don't realize just how much of a balancing game it is. Even though I am a conservative, I understand the need to remain civil when it comes to debates and exchanges... that's part of the reason that when things on this list break down to name-calling I'll either start making jokes, try to bring the conversation back to more civil ground or just walk away.

As I've said in the past, it's not worth making my lisiopril work harder.

Tonight's show turned out to be right on track, even with a very busy weekend by both hosts! Episode 87: Grayscale Politics

Our President has decided that he can blur the lines between Federal and State duties with the Gates issue and make an obvious race baiting statement. Meanwhile, Clinton is trying to actually do her job and getting bombarded from all sides. A lot of good interaction from Talkshoe and SecondLife tonight! Thanks to all who take the time to join us when we record the show every weekend. We went done an interesting path near the end of the show, talking about some of the things that have been lost in today's political debate - including the ability to disagree without being disagreeable. Episode 86: Thinking To Your Health

This episode is another departure from our normal show format - but well worth it! Normally we don't pick the same subjects that "everyone else" is doing - makes us sound too much like we're just parroting talking points.... in this episode we have to cover the hot topic of health care reform. Quite a good discussion, actually. We hit on some points and articles that haven't gotten a lot of coverage in other arenas. We now have a discussion forum at RepublicanOperative.com that you can access it by going to http://www.republicanoperative.com/forums/ecc-podcast-episodes/. Also, our facebook page is up and running and of course we have our store at Printfection.com/eccstuff. Thank you for your continued support and participation with the show. We also have a voice comment line! You can use the "Call Me" button to leave a voice comment at any time. Items/Articles discussed in tonight's show:

Episode 85: Good Idea, Bad Idea

In this episode talked about some ideas that have been tossed about, and why they are good ideas or bad ideas. These can come from any source, from the average citizen to lobby groups and even proposed legislation and news articles. A lot of participation from both TalkShoe and SecondLife again in this episode, thanks to all who joined in! The show had to be edited due to some technical issues but that's okay We now have a discussion forum at RepublicanOperative.com that you can access it by going to http://www.republicanoperative.com/forums/ecc-podcast-episodes/. Also, our facebook page is up and running and of course we have our store at Printfection.com/eccstuff. Thank you for your continued support and participation with the show. Bad Idea: Los Angeles Pays for Michael Jackson Funeral

Episode 84: Patriotic Taxing & Spending

Happy Independence Day, folks! Tonight's show features comment conversation and MUPPETS! Tonight we covered an array of topics and even hit on a couple of things that we didn't plan on! There was also a LOT of very good audience participation including some comments from a new listener and a phone call from Warpig. If you have to skip any parts of the show, make sure you listen to the last 5 minutes of the show as we used a slightly different closing audio clip in honor of the national holiday. We now have a discussion forum at RepublicanOperative.com that you can access it by going to http://www.republicanoperative.com/forums/ecc-podcast-episodes/. Episode 83: In Who's Name?

Tonight we're going to be talking about religion and politics - two things that affect most of us. The theme of the show for the evening is, "Who's name are these people talking in?" We're going to focus on some good and some not so good things that have come out in the news recently. The show turned out to be as fun as promised! We had a good turnout in both TalkShoe and SecondLife and managed to get through almost all of the articles selected. One of the more interesting discussions, which I would like to see more of and get comments on, is the one of where the Republican party needs to go to win in 2010! During the show I talked about the community at RepublicanOperative.com! We now have a discussion forum there and you can access it by going to http://www.republicanoperative.com/forums/ecc-podcast-episodes/. Also, our facebook page is up and running and of course we have our store at Printfection.com/eccstuff. Items discussed in this episode:

Episode 82: What were we saying about foreign policy?

In this episode of the podcast, Ken and I reflect on the warnings given to the Obama administration and show examples of how their refusal to at least acknowledge those warnings is now coming back to bite them in the rear end! When it comes to foreign policy, the liberal concept that "everyone will love us if we don't flex our muscles" has resulted in creating more harm than good for the US abroad. Last weekend I talked about the community at RepublicanOperative.com! This morning I got word that a message area specific to our podcast has been created! You can access it by going to http://www.republicanoperative.com/forums/ecc-podcast-episodes/. Also, our facebook page is up and running and of course we have our store at Printfection.com/eccstuff. Episode 80: Obama Needs a Better Speech Writer

In this episode we were supposed to discuss Obama's recent speeches and the self-contradictions and historical mistakes he's made. We're also going to extend the show to proclamations and statements made by Obama's representatives in the administration. That's where we started - and a lot of what we did talk about. However, there were some other areas that had to be talked about as well! There were some great comments and a few interesting side-topics that may have to be explored later. Here's what we talked about (at least a few of the articles)
As much as we wanted to talk about these, time just wasn't there for it
